The Lemons
This piece is my take on a classic fruit subject, but approached in a more decorative way. I painted two lemons with deep green leaves using gouache technique, and placed them on a bold blue and cream striped background so the whole work would feel bright, graphic, and sunlit.
What interested me here was the contrast between natural form and structured pattern. The lemons and leaves are observed in a more organic, painterly way, while the striped panel creates a strong rhythm behind them. I like how that tension makes the fruit feel even more vivid and tactile.
With gouache, I can build color in a very direct way. I used that to bring out the density of the yellow tones, the darker speckled surface of the lemons, and the glossy, slightly heavy look of the leaves. Even though the subject is simple, I wanted the painting to feel rich in surface and full of warmth.
For me, this work sits somewhere between botanical painting, still life, and decorative wall art. It has a Mediterranean mood, a bit of folk-art energy, and the kind of color palette that can act as a strong accent in an interior.
